One Day in Dubrovnik – How to spend the perfect 24h in Dubrovnik

Only one day in Dubrovnik? It’s not ideal — but it’s enough. If you’re smart about timing and skip the fluff, you can walk the ancient walls, dive into legends (both real and HBO-crafted), sneak in a swim, and still make it to Mount Srđ for a golden hour dinner above the sea.

I’ve visited Dubrovnik more times than I can count, and after playing tour guide for friends with just a day to spare, I’ve fine-tuned the ultimate Dubrovnik in one-day itinerary. It’s tight but unrushed, iconic but not cliché.

Now I’m sharing the perfect 1 day Drubrovnik itinerary with you, with two options to choose from: slow-paced or packed with a boat trip!

One day in Dubrovnik itinerary

You don’t need a week to fall for Dubrovnik — just an early start and a little insider strategy. You’ve got two excellent options — depending on your travel style:

A) Classic Dubrovnik in a Day

Perfect if it’s your first visit and you want the full experience without rushing. This itinerary keeps you in the city and focuses on history, views, culture, and fjaka (that glorious Croatian art of doing nothing). Expect iconic landmarks, a fantastic lunch, a dip in the Adriatic, and a sunset finale from the best seat in town.

B) Dubrovnik + Elaphiti Islands

Best for sunny days and adventure moods. You’ll still see the essential highlights in the city — then swap the afternoon heat for a half-day island-hopping boat tour, with swim stops, cold drinks, and cliff views. You’ll be back just in time to ride the cable car up Mount Srđ for dinner with a view.

Both plans start early and end with gelato (as all great travel days should).

To truly make the most of your time here and avoid getting lost, make sure to book this walking tour.

Make sure to grab this Dubrovnik Card to save on entrance fees. It includes access to the City Walls, a bunch of museums and galleries, Rector’s Palace, public transport and more.

But if you’re not going to visit any museums or palaces then you’re better off with getting the City Walls tickets separately.

Dubrovnik walls bridge - Dalmatia, Dubrovnik, South Dalmatia

A) How to spend one full day in Dubrovnik

This one is for those who want Dalmatian charm, medieval grandeur, and that Adriatic sparkle (almost) without leaving the city walls. This itinerary mixes structure with fjaka-friendly pauses, and ends with a sunset dinner above the rooftops.

Start early with a full loop around the City Walls — the earlier the better to dodge crowds and sunstroke. After coffee and a slow wander through the Old Town, join this guided walking tour to get your bearings and hear the stories behind the stones.

For the afternoon, you’ve got two solid options:

  • If you’re a fan of fantasy epics and dramatic ruins, the Game of Thrones Tour offers a fun, 2-hour dive into filming locations — plus a ferry over to Lokrum Island.
  • Prefer paddling to pop culture? This kayaking and snorkeling tour gives you the same island backdrop with a salty, sun-drenched twist.

Pro tip: If you’re planning to visit the walls, museums, and ride the bus — consider grabbing the Dubrovnik Pass. It covers your walls ticket and more, and it often pays for itself after just 2–3 stops.

Let’s dive into the itinerary into detail!

Dubrovnik Walls - Dalmatia, Dubrovnik, South Dalmatia

8:00 AM: City Walls

Start your day where Dubrovnik is at its most iconic — and most peaceful. The City Walls open at 8:00 AM, and if you’re here on time, you’ll beat both the tour groups and the sunburn.

These are among the most visited city walls in Europe so book your tickets in advance to avoid queues, especially in summer.

Give yourself a full two hours to do the loop — it’s worth it. Stretching nearly 2 kilometers (1.24 miles) around the city, the walls offer a parade of postcard moments.

From Minčeta Tower, you’ll get sweeping views over the terracotta rooftops, while the southern section hugs the Adriatic with cliffside panoramas you’ll want to linger over.

Bring water, wear proper shoes (those stone steps are no joke), and prepare to say “wow” out loud more than once. Start at Ploce Gate to optimize for the rest of this itinerary.

10:00 AM: Coffee break at Cogito Coffee

You’ve earned it. Tucked just outside Pile Gate, Cogito Coffee serves some of the best specialty coffee in town — no small feat in a region that loves espresso but hasn’t totally embraced pour-overs.

This little gem is just a 5min walk from Ploce Gate. Grab a cold brew or flat white, collapse into a shady seat, and let your legs recover from the wall workout.

Onofrios Fountain Dubrovnik - Dalmatia, Dubrovnik, South Dalmatia

10:30 AM: Explore the Old Town

You’re now caffeinated and ready to explore. From here, you’ve got two options: join this top-rated Old Town Walking Tour and let a local guide bring centuries of history to life, or follow this self-guided path that hits all the highlights:

  • Jesuit Staircase – yes, it’s the Game of Thrones “Walk of Shame,” but also a genuinely stunning baroque saircase. You’ll approach them from a peaceful square above the Old Town bustle. You can skip this if you’re joining the GoT tour in the afternoon as you will be coming back.
  • Dubrovnik Cathedral – Just beyond the steps, this elegant baroque cathedral is home to some impressive artwork and a treasury full of relics.
  • Rector’s Palace – Former seat of the Republic’s elected ruler, now a museum with grand halls and period furniture. Included with the Dubrovnik Pass.
  • Luža Square – The Old Town’s main square and your visual jackpot. Don’t miss:
    • Sponza Palace – A rare Gothic survivor of Dubrovnik’s great earthquake.
    • Orlando’s Column – Medieval free speech symbol and meeting point.
    • The Bell Tower – Keeps time with the help of two bronze brothers, Maro and Baro.
  • Stradun – Stroll the city’s polished central street from east to west. Grab a gelato, duck into a side alley, or just admire the view.
  • Franciscan Monastery & Pharmacy – A peaceful cloister and one of Europe’s oldest operating pharmacies (since 1317!).
  • Onofrio’s Fountain – Still flowing after more than 500 years, it’s your final cool-off stop before heading out.
  • Pile Gate – The grand western gate and your exit point, opening onto one of the best photo ops in town.
  • West Harbor – Before lunch, take a few minutes to enjoy the sea air and snap views of the dramatic cliffs and kayak-dotted bay. Also included in the GoT tour.
  • Fort Lovrijenac – Dubrovnik’s dramatic “Gibraltar on the Adriatic.” If you’ve got 20–30 minutes to spare, you can climb up for spectacular views back over the Old Town walls. It’s included with your City Walls ticket or Dubrovnik Pass.
  • Dominican Monastery (optional detour) – If time allows, swing to this quieter, art-filled monastery tucked near the eastern wall.
Dubrovnik Fort Kayaks - Dalmatia, Dubrovnik, South Dalmatia

1:30 PM: Lunch with a View

By now, you’ve probably worked up an apetitte and so there’s no need to backtrack across the city to eat well. Here are two excellent spots just outside the walls:

  • Dubravka 1836 – Right outside Pile Gate, this open-air terrace serves up classic Croatian fare with fort-and-sea views. It’s a bit touristy, sure — but convenient, breezy, and ideal for a leisurely sit-down meal with a cold drink.
  • Ala Mizerija – Tucked above the rocks near Šulić Beach (your next stop), this small, local favorite offers grilled seafood, sandwiches, and no-fuss plates with a million-dollar view. Great choice if you want to eat closer to the water and head straight to your swim spot afterward.

2:30 PM: Fjaka or Swim Break by the Sea

After lunch, it’s time for a little fjaka — that glorious, unapologetic Croatian art of doing nothing. You’re already near Šulić Beach, one of the city’s most scenic and least crowded swim spots. Just follow the path downhill past Beach Bar Dodo for a refreshing dip, a nap in the shade, or a cold drink with cliffside views.

Bring a towel and wear your swimsuit under your clothes if you plan to swim. If you’d rather stay dry, Dodo’s loungers and local beers do the job beautifully.

4:00 PM: Choose Your Adventure – Game of Thrones or Kayaking

You’ve got two excellent ways to wrap up the afternoon — one fot you GoT fans out there and the other literally dipping into the Adriatic. Both include Lokrum island, just choose what suits your vibe:

  • For GoT fans:
The Game of Thrones Tour with Lokrum Island is a 2-hour deep dive into Dubrovnik’s role as King’s Landing. You’ll visit Fort Lovrijenac, climb famous filming locations, and ferry to Lokrum Island, where peacocks roam and the Iron Throne awaits your photo op.
  • For sea lovers:
Not into thrones and dragons? Join this Sea Kayaking & Snorkeling Tour instead. It launches from the harbor just below Fort Lovrijenac and takes you around the city walls, Lokrum Island, and sea caves.
Dubrovnik MT Srd - Dalmatia, Dubrovnik, South Dalmatia

6:30 PM: Cable Car to Mount Srđ

As golden hour sets in, head to the lower station of the Dubrovnik Cable Car just outside the city walls. The ride takes less than four minutes, but the views are unforgettable — especially if you arrive just before sunset.

From the top of Mount Srđ, you’ll see the entire Old Town spread below you, the Elaphiti Islands dotting the horizon, and the sea turning to glass. It’s the kind of view that silences even the chattiest tour group.

If you’ve got the Dubrovnik Pass, use it for discounted entry; otherwise, tickets can be bought on-site or booked in advance.

7:00 PM: Sunset Dinner at Panorama Restaurant

Right next to the upper cable car station, Panorama Restaurant delivers exactly what its name promises. This is a “book ahead” situation — everyone wants that front-row seat for sunset. Expect classic Dalmatian dishes with a fine-dining twist and the best table view in town.

If you didn’t reserve or prefer something more low-key, here are some great dinner options in town:

  • Buffet Kamenice – Fast, fresh, and affordable. Locals love it. Order the black risotto for a classic seafood hit.
  • Nautika – Fine dining just outside Pile Gate with spectacular views of the forts. Try the St. Jacob’s scallops or veal in Malvasia sauce.
  • Barba – Quick, casual seafood street food — octopus burgers, tuna wraps, and no reservations needed.

9:00 PM: Gelato or Drinks by the Sea

Back at sea level, end your day on a sweet or spirited note:

  • Peppino’s Gelato – Arguably the best in town, with flavors that go way beyond vanilla. Expect a line, but it moves fast.
  • Buža Bar – If you still have energy, this legendary cliffside bar (tucked through a literal hole in the wall) offers nightcaps with waves crashing below and stars above.

If you still have the energy and a few more steps left in you I highly recommend you take some time to get wonderfully lost in the side alleys, they really are magical!

And that’s a wrap. One day in Dubrovnik — done right.

B) Dubrovnik and Beyond in One Day

Want the best of both worlds, city and sea, in just one day? This itinerary is for if you like your history with a side of island-hopping and aren’t afraid of a packed but perfectly balanced plan.

You’ll kick off with Dubrovnik’s biggest hits: the City Walls, the Old Town, and a quick stroll through centuries of architecture (or skip the guesswork and book this walking tour for the best stories).

But instead of spending your afternoon sweating on stone, you’ll jump aboard this Elaphiti Islands boat trip — a 4-hour mini escape with cold drinks, cliff views, and perfect swimming spots (cave included!).

It’s a smart way to see more without rushing, and you’ll still make it back in time for a sunset ride on the Dubrovnik Cable Car and dinner with a panoramic view from Mount Srđ. If you only have one day and want variety (or a cool way to escape the afternoon heat in summer), this is the one for you.

Dubrovnik view from walls - Dalmatia, Dubrovnik, South Dalmatia

8:00 AM: Walk Dubrovnik City Walls

Start strong with Dubrovnik’s crown jewel — the City Walls. Nearly 2 kilometers of stone ramparts loop around the Old Town, offering sweeping views over red-tiled rooftops, the shimmering Adriatic, and fortresses that look straight out of a fantasy film. Go early — not just to beat the heat, but to enjoy a more peaceful loop before the tour groups arrive.

Dubrovnik Rector Palace - Dalmatia, Dubrovnik, South Dalmatia

10:00 AM: Explore the Old Town or Join a Walking Tour

You’ve got two great options here. If you want to maximize your time and skip the guesswork, I highly recommend this guided walking tour — it’s sharp, efficient, and surprisingly fun.

Prefer to wander at your own pace? Focus on these key highlights:

  • Pile Gate – Your main entry point into the city and a historical defensive structure.
  • Onofrio’s Fountain – Still pumping fresh water after 500+ years.
  • Franciscan Monastery & Pharmacy – One of the oldest still-functioning pharmacies in Europe.
  • Stradun – Dubrovnik’s gleaming limestone promenade.
  • Luža Square – The Old Town’s ceremonial heart.
  • Orlando’s Column – Medieval symbol of civic freedom.
  • Sponza Palace – Survived the 1667 earthquake; now home to the city archives.
  • Rector’s Palace – Once the seat of the Republic’s ruler; now a museum.

Skip the detours and museum linger time — you’ve got a boat to catch this afternoon.

12:00 PM: Quick Lunch at Barba

With a boat to catch, you’ll want something quick, local, and satisfying — Barba delivers every time. This tiny seafood street-food spot is a local favorite for good reason. Expect fast service, generous portions, and no fuss.

Try the octopus burger, tuna wrap, or black risotto if you’re feeling traditional.

elafiti island beach - Dalmatia, Dubrovnik, South Dalmatia

1:45 PM: Elaphiti Islands Boat Tour

Time to trade stone walls for saltwater. This 4-hour speedboat tour to the Elaphiti Islands packs a lot into an easy half-day escape.

After a quick safety briefing, you’ll hop aboard and cruise out past Lokrum toward the islands. First stop: Šunj Beach on Lopud — one of the rare sandy beaches in the Adriatic. Sunbathe, swim, or just float around in bliss.

Then it’s off to Kolocep Island, where you’ll swim through the Three Green Caves, followed by a final dip in the surreal-blue glow of the Blue Cave — easily one of the most otherworldly swim spots near Dubrovnik.

Drinks (water, wine, beer, juice) are included, the vibe is relaxed, and you’ll be back in time for sunset on Mount Srđ.

6:00 PM: Short Break or Freshen Up

You’ll return to port around 5:45 PM — just enough time to rinse off the salt, change into something breezy, and catch your breath before the next highlight. If you’re staying nearby, a quick shower-and-reset is doable; otherwise, a cold drink by Pile Gate will tide you over.

Dubrovnik cable car - Dalmatia, Dubrovnik, South Dalmatia

6:30 PM: Dubrovnik Cable Car to Mount Srđ

Next up: altitude. Head to the lower station and ride the Dubrovnik Cable Car up to Mount Srđ — a short lift with a seriously big payoff. The views from the top stretch across the red rooftops, out to the Elaphiti Islands you just visited, and beyond. Time it right and you’ll catch golden hour painting the sea in pink and gold.

7:00 PM: Sunset Dinner with a View

If you’ve reserved ahead, grab a table at Panorama Restaurant, perched right next to the cable car station. The food’s good, the wine list is better, and the view? Dubrovnik at its absolute best.

No reservation? Don’t stress — head back down for these excellent Plan Bs:

  • Buffet Kamenice – Fresh, local, unfussy. Order the black risotto.
  • Nautika – Fancy but unforgettable, especially if you’re celebrating.
  • Barba – Fast, casual, and still one of the best bites in town.

9:00 PM: Gelato or Drinks by the Sea

End your day with a scoop from Peppino’s Gelato or a drink at Buža Bar, Dubrovnik’s legendary cliff bar. The sea’s still warm, the sky’s still glowing, and you’ve just nailed a one-day itinerary most people need two days for.

Is Dubrovnik Worth Visiting?

Absolutely. Dubrovnik is one of those rare places that lives up to the hype — and then some. The medieval walls, cliffside bars, sea-sculpted islands, and polished marble lanes pack a lot into a small, walkable space. Whether you’re into history, beaches, or just want a setting that looks Photoshopped in real life, it delivers. Even with just one day, you’ll walk away with highlight-reel memories.

Getting to Dubrovnik

  • By Air: Fly into Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) — it’s 30 minutes from the Old Town by shuttle, taxi, or pre-booked transfer.
  • By Ferry: Jadrolinija and Krilo run ferries from Split, Hvar, and Korčula, often daily in summer.
  • By Car or Bus: Dubrovnik is driveable from Split (3.5 hours) or Kotor, Montenegro (2 hours). Note: border crossing queues can add time.
  • From Cruise Ships: Most dock at Gruž Port, a 10-minute taxi or bus ride to Pile Gate.

Getting Around Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik’s Old Town is pedestrian-only — and that’s part of the charm. Here’s how to move beyond the walls:

  • Walking – Essential. Wear good shoes — there are lots of steps.
  • Public Buses – Reliable and cheap. Most routes pass through Pile or Gruž.
  • Cable Car – Takes you to Mount Srđ in under 4 minutes.
  • Boats & Ferries – For Lokrum Island or day trips.
  • Dubrovnik Pass – If you’re doing the walls + museums + buses, the Dubrovnik All Access Pass is absolutely worth it.

Where to Eat and Drink in Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik’s food scene blends Dalmatian classics, fresh seafood, and a touch of indulgence. Some favorites:

  • Buffet Kamenice for Black Risotto – Unfussy, fast, and full of locals.
  • Barba for Octopus Burgers – Tiny, casual, and always good.
  • Kopun for Elevated Croatian Dishes – Think slow-cooked capon and wine pairings.
  • Nautika for a Special Occasion – Terrace dining with fortress views.
  • Buža Bar for Cliffside Drinks – The views account for half the price of your drink, but worth every cent.

Best Time to Visit Dubrovnik

The best time to visit Dubrovnik is May, early June, late September, or early October. These months strike the perfect balance between good weather and manageable crowds, making them ideal for sightseeing, swimming, and enjoying the Old Town without feeling overwhelmed.

May and early June offer sunny skies, blooming bougainvillea, and comfortable sea temperatures — perfect for walking the walls or taking a kayak tour. Crowds are thinner than in peak summer, and prices are slightly lower.

Late September to early October brings warm days, cooler evenings, and the chance to experience Dubrovnik after the summer rush. The sea is still swimmable, restaurants are fully open, and sunsets from Mount Srđ are especially vivid.

July and August are peak season. Expect hot weather, packed streets (especially when cruise ships dock), and higher prices. That said, if you love festivals, nightlife, and a buzzing atmosphere, summer delivers.

Winter (November to March) is the quietest time in Dubrovnik. While some tours and restaurants shut down, it’s a peaceful period with mild weather and lower accommodation rates — great for a serene, off-season city break.

What time should I visit the City Walls?

Aim to visit the City Walls as close to opening or closing time as possible to avoid crowds and heat.
